Accounting Contribution Margin (Per-Unit) Calculator

Calculate the contribution margin per unit, contribution margin ratio, and estimated break-even sales volume from your selling price and variable costs.

Your Details

Overview

This Accounting Contribution Margin (Per-Unit) Calculator estimates the amount each sale leaves after variable costs. Enter your selling price, direct materials, direct labor, variable overhead, and variable selling costs to see the per-unit contribution margin and margin ratio. You can also add fixed costs to estimate break-even sales volume.

How it works

Contribution margin per unit equals the selling price per unit minus total variable cost per unit. Total variable cost combines direct materials, direct labor, variable overhead, and variable selling costs. The contribution margin ratio divides the per-unit contribution margin by the selling price. For the break-even estimate, fixed costs are divided by contribution margin per unit and rounded up to a whole unit.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter the selling price for one unit.
  2. 2Add every variable cost that applies to each unit sold.
  3. 3Enter fixed costs for the period you want to assess.
  4. 4Review the contribution margin per unit and contribution margin ratio.
  5. 5Use the estimated break-even volume as a planning reference.

Example Calculation

Selling price per unit

$50

Direct materials per unit

$12

Direct labor per unit

$8

Variable overhead per unit

$5

Variable selling cost per unit

$3

Total fixed costs

$22,000

Contribution margin per unit

$22.00

With a selling price of 50 and total variable costs of 28 per unit, the contribution margin is 22 per unit, or 44.0% of sales. Fixed costs of 22,000 would require an estimated 1,000 units to break even.

Frequently asked questions

What is contribution margin per unit?

Contribution margin per unit is the selling price of one unit less all variable costs associated with that unit. It is used to cover fixed costs first, then contributes to profit.

What costs are variable costs?

Variable costs generally rise or fall with sales volume. Common examples include materials, piece-rate labor, sales commissions, packaging, shipping, and card processing fees when they apply per sale.

What is the contribution margin ratio?

The contribution margin ratio shows contribution margin as a percentage of sales. A 40% ratio means 40 cents of every sales dollar remains after variable costs.

How is break-even volume calculated?

Break-even volume is calculated by dividing fixed costs by contribution margin per unit, then rounding up because a fraction of a unit cannot normally be sold.

Can contribution margin be negative?

Yes. A negative contribution margin means the selling price is lower than variable costs per unit. Selling more units under those conditions generally increases the loss before fixed costs.

Does contribution margin equal gross profit?

Not always. Gross profit often subtracts cost of goods sold, while contribution margin subtracts all variable costs. The exact classification can differ based on the accounting method and business context.

Assumptions and warnings

Assumptions

  • All entered costs are classified correctly as variable or fixed.
  • Selling price and variable costs are consistent for every unit sold.
  • Fixed costs apply to the same period as the break-even estimate.
  • The calculation excludes income taxes, financing costs, returns, discounts, and changes in sales mix unless included in the entered costs.

Warnings

  • This calculator provides an estimate only and is not accounting, tax, or financial advice.
  • A zero or negative contribution margin means additional unit sales will not cover fixed costs under these assumptions.
