General EBITDA Per-Unit Questions

Core concepts behind measuring EBITDA for an individual unit.

What is EBITDA per unit?

EBITDA per unit is estimated operating earnings from one unit sold before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization.

What can count as a unit?

A unit can be a physical product, completed service, active customer account, subscription period, order, or project, provided the revenue and costs use the same unit basis.

Why calculate EBITDA per unit?

It can help assess unit economics, compare products or periods, and understand how volume affects estimated operating earnings.

Is EBITDA per unit the same as net profit per unit?

No. Net profit generally includes items EBITDA excludes, such as interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization.

Inputs and Calculation Method

How the calculator uses revenue, costs, operating income, and sales volume.

How is EBITDA per unit calculated?

The calculator adds revenue per unit and recurring other operating income per unit, then subtracts cost of goods sold per unit and operating expenses per unit.

How is total EBITDA calculated?

Total EBITDA equals total revenue plus total other operating income, minus total cost of goods sold and total operating expenses. With consistent per-unit amounts, it also equals EBITDA per unit multiplied by units sold.

What is revenue per unit?

Revenue per unit is average net revenue earned for each unit after applicable discounts, returns, and allowances.

What is other operating income per unit?

It is recurring income related to normal operations that is not included in sales revenue. Enter zero when none applies.

How is EBITDA margin calculated?

EBITDA margin equals EBITDA per unit divided by revenue per unit, multiplied by 100.

Costs and Expense Classification

Questions about which expenses belong in the calculation.

Should cost of goods sold include depreciation?

No. For this EBITDA estimate, cost of goods sold should exclude depreciation and amortization.

Should operating expenses include amortization?

No. Amortization should be excluded because EBITDA is calculated before amortization.

Can selling and administrative costs be included?

Yes. They can be included as operating expenses per unit when they are allocated consistently and exclude depreciation and amortization.

Should one-time costs be included?

The calculator is designed around recurring per-unit operating figures. Including one-time costs may be useful for a specific internal scenario, but it can make results less comparable with recurring EBITDA estimates.

Can fixed overhead be allocated per unit?

Yes, but the allocation method matters. A fixed-cost allocation may change materially when sales volume changes.

Accuracy and Interpretation

How to use the estimates carefully and understand potential differences from reported results.

Why might the result differ from reported EBITDA?

Reported results may reflect different accounting policies, revenue recognition, cost allocations, lease treatment, non-recurring adjustments, or EBITDA definitions.

Can EBITDA per unit be negative?

Yes. It is negative when per-unit revenue plus other operating income is less than direct costs plus operating expenses.

What is a good EBITDA margin?

There is no single suitable margin for every business. Industry, pricing, scale, product mix, and accounting practices can all affect the result.

Does a higher EBITDA per unit always mean a better business result?

Not necessarily. Sales volume, cash requirements, capital expenditure, risk, and the reliability of cost allocations also matter.

Is this calculator accounting or tax advice?

No. It provides an estimate based on entered figures and is not accounting, financial, or tax advice.
