Accounting Economic Order Quantity (Annual) Calculator FAQ
Answers to common questions about annual EOQ inputs, results, assumptions, costs, and inventory planning use cases.
This FAQ explains what the annual EOQ calculator measures, which costs to enter, and where the standard model may need practical adjustment. Results are educational estimates, not operational or professional advice.
General EOQ questions
Core concepts behind the annual economic order quantity model.
What does an annual EOQ calculator do?
It estimates an order quantity that minimizes the combined annual cost of ordering inventory and holding cycle stock.
What is economic order quantity used for?
EOQ can provide a starting point for setting replenishment quantities for items with reasonably stable demand and costs.
Is EOQ the same as a reorder point?
No. EOQ estimates how much to order, while a reorder point estimates when to order.
Inputs and costs
How to choose the three core inputs used by the calculator.
What should annual demand include?
Use the expected total units sold, used, or consumed over one year for the specific stock item.
What can be included in cost per order?
It may include order administration, supplier communication, receiving, inspection, invoice processing, and similar per-order activity costs.
What can be included in annual holding cost per unit?
It may include storage, handling, insurance, shrinkage, deterioration, and the cost of capital tied up in one unit of stock.
Results and accuracy
How to interpret the calculated outputs and their limits.
Why does the calculator show average inventory as half of EOQ?
The basic model assumes inventory falls evenly from the full order quantity to zero, making average cycle stock half the order quantity.
What is total relevant annual cost?
It is annual ordering cost plus annual cycle-stock holding cost. It excludes inventory purchase cost under the standard model.
Can the calculated EOQ be different from the best practical order quantity?
Yes. Supplier pack sizes, minimum orders, delivery timing, storage capacity, and uncertain demand can require a different workable quantity.
Special inventory situations
Cases where the basic EOQ model may need additional analysis.
Can I use EOQ with quantity discounts?
Use EOQ as a reference, then compare total costs at each supplier price break because purchase price may change the preferred quantity.
Can I use EOQ for seasonal demand?
It can be a starting estimate, but seasonal forecasts and changing replenishment needs should be considered separately.
Does EOQ include safety stock?
No. Standard EOQ calculates cycle stock only; safety stock is an additional inventory component.
What is the annual EOQ formula?
EOQ = √((2 × annual demand × cost per order) ÷ annual holding cost per unit).
