General monthly unit economics questions

Basic concepts and uses of the calculator.

What are monthly unit economics?

Monthly unit economics describe revenue, direct costs and profitability in relation to customers over a month.

Who can use a monthly unit economics calculator?

It can be used for a business, product line, subscription offering or service where customer-related revenue and costs can be estimated.

What does this calculator estimate?

It estimates monthly revenue, direct costs, gross profit, gross margin, customer acquisition cost and operating profit.

Is this an accounting statement?

No. It is a simplified planning estimate and not a replacement for formal financial statements or accounting records.

Customer and revenue inputs

How customer movement and ARPU affect the calculation.

What counts as an active customer?

Use a consistent definition of a paying or revenue-generating customer for both beginning and ending counts.

Why are beginning and ending customers averaged?

Customers may join or leave during the month. The average is a simple way to estimate the customer base served across the period.

What is ARPU?

ARPU means average revenue per customer. Here it is the average monthly revenue earned from one active customer before direct costs.

What if customers pay different prices?

Enter a weighted average monthly revenue per active customer, or calculate separate segments if their economics differ materially.

Costs, margins and CAC

How to classify costs and interpret profitability outputs.

What should be included in direct cost per customer?

Include costs that generally increase as more customers are served, such as fulfilment, usage-based hosting, delivery, payment processing or directly attributable support.

What should be included in other operating costs?

Use other monthly operating costs such as payroll, rent, software and administration when they are not direct customer-serving costs.

How is gross profit different from operating profit?

Gross profit subtracts direct costs from revenue. Operating profit then subtracts entered sales and marketing spend plus other operating costs.

What does CAC mean?

Customer acquisition cost is the sales and marketing spend entered divided by new customers acquired during the same month.

Can CAC be higher than first-month revenue?

Yes. CAC and first-month revenue measure different things; the calculator does not estimate customer lifetime value or payback period.

Accuracy and interpretation

Factors that can cause actual results to differ from estimates.

Why might estimated revenue differ from recorded revenue?

Actual results can differ because of billing dates, refunds, usage, plan changes, revenue recognition and the timing of customer changes.

Does operating profit equal net profit?

Not necessarily. Taxes, interest, depreciation, amortisation and unentered income or expenses are excluded.

What happens if no new customers are acquired?

CAC cannot be calculated by dividing spend by zero new customers. Review the period, acquisition attribution and sales and marketing spend separately.

Should I compare results month to month?

Comparisons can be useful when definitions, cost classifications and measurement periods are kept consistent.
