Accountants Holiday Pay (Hourly) Calculator FAQ
Answers to common questions about estimating holiday pay, paid holiday hours and annual leave accrual for hourly-paid workers.
This FAQ explains the inputs and results used by the hourly holiday pay calculator. It covers regular work patterns, gross pay estimates, leave accrual and situations where a simple hourly calculation may not be enough.
Using the calculator
Questions about the information to enter and the results shown.
What does this hourly holiday pay calculator estimate?
It estimates gross pay for booked holiday days, the paid hours those days represent, estimated annual entitlement and leave accrued so far.
What hourly rate should I enter?
Enter the worker's normal gross hourly rate before deductions. This calculator does not calculate net pay.
What are usual weekly hours?
They are the worker's normal or average paid hours in a typical week under the regular pattern being estimated.
What does working days per week mean?
It means the number of days the worker normally works each week. It is used to convert weekly hours into average daily hours.
Holiday pay and hours
Questions about how booked holiday becomes a pay estimate.
How are paid holiday hours calculated?
Holiday days are multiplied by usual weekly hours divided by normal working days per week.
Why are daily hours needed for holiday pay?
Holiday is entered in days, while the rate is entered per hour. Average daily hours provide the link between those two measures.
Is the result gross or net holiday pay?
The result is an estimated gross amount. Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and other deductions are not included.
Can this calculator handle a half-day holiday?
Yes. Enter a fractional number of holiday days, such as 0.5, and the calculator estimates the corresponding paid hours and gross pay.
Annual entitlement and accrual
Questions about the calculator's simplified leave allowance estimate.
How is annual holiday entitlement calculated?
The calculator estimates entitlement as 5.6 times the worker's normal days per week, capped at 28 days.
How is holiday leave accrued during the year?
The annual estimate is spread evenly over 52 weeks. For example, 26 completed weeks produces half of the estimated annual entitlement.
Does accrued leave subtract holiday already taken?
No. It shows estimated leave accrued, not a remaining balance. Deduct approved or taken leave separately when checking a balance.
Are public holidays included in the entitlement?
This depends on the contract and employer policy. The calculator does not determine whether public holidays are included or additional.
Accuracy and irregular work
Questions about when the simple estimate may not reflect payroll treatment.
Can I use this calculator for variable-hours workers?
It can provide a rough illustration, but variable hours may require a different calculation based on an applicable reference period or contractual method.
Can I use it when pay includes commission or overtime?
The calculator uses one entered hourly rate. It may not reflect additional earnings that are relevant to holiday pay in a particular situation.
Why might payroll pay a different amount?
A different result may arise from contractual terms, irregular schedules, pay averaging, leave-year dates, rounding or deductions.
Is this calculator employment or tax advice?
No. It is a general educational estimate and should not be treated as employment, tax or legal advice.
How is holiday pay calculated for an hourly-paid worker?
For a regular pattern, estimated holiday pay is booked holiday days multiplied by average daily hours and the normal gross hourly rate.
