Accounting Contribution Margin Calculator

Calculate contribution margin, contribution margin ratio, and contribution per unit from sales revenue, variable costs, and units sold.

Your Details

Overview

This accounting contribution margin calculator estimates the revenue left after variable costs are deducted. Enter sales revenue, total variable costs, and units sold for the same period to see the total contribution margin, margin ratio, and average contribution per unit.

How it works

Contribution margin equals sales revenue minus variable costs. The contribution margin ratio divides that remaining amount by sales revenue and expresses it as a percentage. Contribution margin per unit divides the total contribution margin by units sold. These figures show how much revenue is available to cover fixed operating costs and, after those costs are covered, profit.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter total sales revenue for the period.
  2. 2Add all variable costs associated with those sales.
  3. 3Enter the number of units sold in the same period.
  4. 4Review the contribution margin and contribution margin ratio.
  5. 5Compare the per-unit result with your pricing and cost targets.

Example Calculation

Sales revenue

$100,000

Total variable costs

$60,000

Units sold

1000

Contribution Margin

$40,000

With sales revenue of 100,000, variable costs of 60,000, and 1,000 units sold, the contribution margin is 40,000. The contribution margin ratio is 40.0%, and each unit contributes 40.00 on average.

Frequently asked questions

What is contribution margin?

Contribution margin is the sales revenue remaining after variable costs are subtracted. It contributes toward fixed costs and profit.

How do you calculate the contribution margin ratio?

Divide contribution margin by sales revenue, then multiply by 100. For example, a 40,000 contribution margin on 100,000 of revenue gives a 40% ratio.

What costs are variable costs?

Variable costs generally change with sales or production volume. Common examples include direct materials, sales commissions, shipping per order, and production wages paid per unit.

Are fixed costs included in contribution margin?

No. Fixed costs are not subtracted when calculating contribution margin. They are covered by the contribution margin before a business generates operating profit.

Why is contribution margin per unit useful?

It shows the average amount each additional unit sold contributes after its variable cost. This can help compare products, evaluate pricing, and assess sales volume targets.

Can a contribution margin be negative?

Yes. A negative result means variable costs exceed sales revenue for the period, so additional sales at the same prices and costs may increase losses before fixed costs.

  • Variable costs include only costs that change directly with sales or production volume.
  • Fixed costs, taxes, interest, and other non-variable expenses are not deducted from contribution margin.
  • Results are estimates and depend on accurate cost classification.
