Monthly EBITDA basics

Definitions and purpose of the metric.

What is monthly EBITDA?

Monthly EBITDA is earnings for one month before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization.

What does EBITDA measure?

It measures operating earnings before financing, income taxes, and the non-cash expenses of depreciation and amortization.

Is EBITDA the same as cash flow?

No. EBITDA does not account for working capital changes, capital spending, debt payments, taxes, or all cash timing differences.

Calculator inputs

Guidance on entering revenue and expenses consistently.

What belongs in cost of goods sold?

Enter direct costs tied to goods or services sold, such as materials, inventory costs, production labor, or direct delivery costs, based on the business's accounting approach.

What belongs in operating expenses excluding D&A?

Enter recurring overhead and operating costs such as payroll, rent, marketing, insurance, utilities, and software, excluding depreciation and amortization.

What is other operating income?

It is recurring income from operations that is not included in revenue. Enter zero if there is none.

Should interest expense be included?

No. Interest is excluded from EBITDA and EBIT in this calculator.

Results and interpretation

How gross profit, margin, EBITDA, and EBIT relate.

How is gross profit different from EBITDA?

Gross profit subtracts only direct costs from revenue. EBITDA also subtracts operating expenses excluding depreciation and amortization, then adds other operating income.

How is EBIT different from EBITDA?

EBIT equals EBITDA less depreciation and amortization. EBITDA excludes those non-cash expenses.

What is a good EBITDA margin?

It varies by industry, business model, growth stage, pricing, and accounting policies. Comparing consistent periods within the same business can be more informative than using a universal benchmark.

What does a negative EBITDA margin mean?

It means the business's operating expenses excluding depreciation and amortization exceeded gross profit plus other operating income for that month.

Accuracy and reporting

Factors that can change the estimate or reported result.

Why might reported EBITDA differ from this calculator?

Differences can arise from accruals, revenue recognition, expense classification, non-recurring items, management adjustments, and reporting policies.

Can I use this calculator for annual EBITDA?

It is designed for monthly figures. You can calculate each month consistently and use the results as part of an annual review, while accounting for timing and seasonality.

Is EBITDA standardized?

Not fully. Businesses may use different definitions or adjustments, so confirm what is included before comparing results.
